1. General Questions
Q. When did the Nikkei 225 start?
A. The Nikkei 225 began to be calculated on September 7, 1950, retroactively calculated back to May 16, 1949. A history of the Nikkei 225 Stock Average is provided in our Nikkei Index History.
Q. What was the Nikkei 225's peak?
A. The average peaked at 38,915.87 points on December 29, 1989.
Q. Which stocks currently make up the Nikkei 225?
A. Go to the Nikkei Constituents page and select all industry categories to see a complete list of components.

 

2. Weighting & Modifications
Q. How are stocks weighted on the Nikkei 225?
A. All companies are given an equal weighting based on a par value of 50 yen per share (see stocks with Irregular Par Values). Events such as stock splits, removals and additions of constituents impact the effective weighting of individual stocks and the Divisor. See the Nikkei Index Calculation page for more details.
Q. Are industries weighted differently within the Nikkei 225 Stock Average?
A. The Nikkei 225 is designed to reflect the overall market, so there is no specific weighting of industries.

 

3. Changes to the Nikkei 225 Components
Q. When do changes occur and how do I find out about them?
A. The stocks are reviewed annually and review results are announced in September. Changes, if required, are made at the beginning of October. Changes may take place at any time if a stock is found to be ineligible (e.g. delistings, etc.). Changes to the Nikkei 225 will be announced in Nikkei's newspapers & on this page.
